The trek begins at Machame Gate after registration. The trail climbs steadily through lush rainforest with giant trees, thick undergrowth, and moss‑covered paths. Wildlife sightings may include monkeys and forest birds. The trail can be muddy, especially after rain. You reach Machame Camp by late afternoon.

Leaving the rainforest, the trail ascends into open moorland with expansive views of Kibo Peak. Vegetation changes to heathers and giant lobelias. The landscape opens dramatically as you cross the Shira Plateau and arrive at Shira Camp.

This is a key acclimatization day. You climb gradually to Lava Tower, where altitude is felt more strongly, before descending to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” approach greatly improves acclimatization. Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall.

The day begins with a scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, offering stunning views and an exciting start. The trail then crosses ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp. This shorter day supports recovery and acclimatization.

The terrain becomes barren and rocky as you approach Barafu Camp. After arrival, climbers rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt later that night. Early dinner and sleep are essential.

Habitat: Arctic → Rainforest
The summit push begins around midnight. You ascend steadily to Stella Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend carefully to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

A gentle descent through rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring back to the hotel.
