Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) → Mandara Hut (2,720m)

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 850m
Habitat: Rainforest

The trek starts at Marangu Gate after registration. The trail climbs gently through dense rainforest with tall trees and rich vegetation. Wildlife such as blue monkeys and birds may be seen. You arrive at Mandara Hut, set in a forest clearing near the Maundi Crater.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,720m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,000m
Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the rainforest, the trail opens into heath and moorland with wide views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the air cooler. Horombo Hut is a large camp with excellent views and is often used for acclimatization.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Acclimatization Day

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours (optional hike)
Habitat: Alpine Moorland

This day is dedicated to acclimatization. Climbers may hike toward Zebra Rocks before returning to Horombo Hut. Resting at altitude greatly improves summit success and helps the body adjust.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Elevation Gain: 983m
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail crosses the barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is rocky and dry, with little vegetation. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, climbers rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt later that night.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 16 km
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,192m
Habitat: Arctic → Moorland

The summit attempt begins around midnight. You ascend steeply to Gilman’s Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,870m)

Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,850m
Habitat: Rainforest

A long descent through moorland and rainforest leads back to Marangu Gate, where climbers receive their summit certificates before transfer to the hotel.
