Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) → Simba Camp (2,650m)

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 700m
Habitat: Farmland → Forest

The trek begins at Rongai Gate, passing through farmland and pine forest before entering native forest. The trail is gentle and quiet, offering a relaxed start to the climb. Simba Camp sits at the edge of the moorland zone.

Day 2: Simba Camp (2,650m) → Second Cave Camp (3,450m)

Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 800m
Habitat: Moorland

The trail climbs steadily through open moorland with views of Kibo Peak. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the landscape opens up. Second Cave Camp provides a cool, open setting for the night.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp (3,450m) → Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)

Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain: 180m
Habitat: Moorland

A shorter and gentler day designed for acclimatization. The path winds through rolling hills with increasing alpine scenery. Kikelewa Camp is tucked into a sheltered valley.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,630m) → Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)

Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain: 700m
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The trail steepens as you ascend toward Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most scenic camps on the mountain and ideal for acclimatization.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) → Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Distance: 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Gain: 373m
Habitat: Alpine Desert

You cross the wide, barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain is dry and rocky. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,703m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Distance: 16 km
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,192m
Habitat: Arctic → Moorland

The summit push begins around midnight. You ascend to Gilman’s Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,870m)

Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,850m
Habitat: Moorland → Rainforest

A long descent through moorland and lush rainforest leads to Marangu Gate, where climbers receive summit certificates and transfer back to the hotel.
